Because the muscles cannot respond to signals from the nerves, they atrophy — weaken and shrink — from inactivity. One in every 6,000 babies is born with SMA. WebWe report a case of a 16-year-old adolescent girl who presented to the pediatric emergency department for worsening abdominal pain and vomiting and had significant weight loss over the previous 4 months. Point-of-care ultrasound was used to assess for signs of superior mesenteric artery syndrome.
